What he does

Everything under
the boards, and
everything on top.

Over 15 years in all aspects of joinery, with flooring as the specialism and the subfloor treated as the real job.

The specialism

Subfloor preparation

Fitters who lay boards are common. Fitters who go on courses about what is underneath them are not, and that is the difference between a floor that is still flat in ten years and one that starts creaking in eighteen months.

Screeding compounds take a floor that is out of level and bring it flat. A damp proof membrane stops moisture rising through a concrete slab and forcing the floor above it apart.

The signs a subfloor was skipped

  • Boards cupping or crowning across their width
  • Gaps opening at the ends after one winter
  • A hollow, drumming sound in patches
  • Lifting near a door or an external wall
  • A laminate that has swelled along the joints
Flooring

Supplied and laid

Chosen off a display stand in the shop rather than a phone screen, then fitted by the same person who sold it to you.

Solid and engineered wood

Laid, with the room and the subfloor deciding which of the two is actually right for it.

Laminate and LVT

Fitted onto a properly prepared base, which is the whole reason one lasts and another does not.

Repairs and re-lays

A floor somebody else got wrong, taken up, put right underneath and laid again.

Trims and thresholds

Doors eased over the new height, thresholds between rooms and the beading that finishes an edge.

Joinery

Made on site

  • Alcove cupboards and shelving either side of a chimney breast
  • Fitted wardrobes built into an awkward bedroom
  • Understairs cupboards and window seats
  • Doors hung, eased and rehung
  • Skirting, architrave and mouldings matched to the originals
  • Stair treads, risers and spindles repaired

Wirral housing is largely older stock, and almost nothing in it is square. Flat-pack does not fit an alcove that is 40mm wider at the top, which is why this work gets made on site instead.

"All aspects of joinery" is his own phrase, and after 15 years it covers most of what a house needs in wood.
